Mob justice takes over in Malawi: Robbers killed
An angry mob in Malawi’s capital Lilongwe has set ablaze two suspected armed robbers after they allegedly tried to steal money from an unknown lady.
Their two accomplices who were armed with guns and panga knives have also reportedly been shot dead including the driver of their getaway vehicle which they were using.
The attempted robbery took place at the Lilongwe City Mall close to Crossroads Hotel along the M1 Road.
There was no immediate comment from police but eye witnesses said about five armed robbers snatched a bag of money from a young lady as she entered Standard Bank to deposit the cash.
“It was around 10:30am when the incident occurred. The two robbers snatched a bag of money from a girl who was entering Standard Bank but bystanders reacted swiftly after noticing what had happened.
“The onlookers prevented the thugs from fleeing the scene to their standby vehicle. They were immediately grabbed as a mob quickly joined the beating up before setting them on fire,” an eye witness told a Nyasa Times correspondent who rushed to the scene and saw the carcass of the two suspected criminals.
The young lady apparently works for City Supermarket which is just few meters away from the bank.
Unconfirmed reports indicate that some few police officers stormed the scene to restore order and rescue the weak robbers but were chased away by the adamant mob vigilantes.
