Morgan Tembo lined up for Escom top job

Morgan Z.U. Tembo, a close relation of MCP President and Leader of Opposition John Zenus Ungapake Tembo has been lined up to take top job at Escom as Chief Executive Officer, we can reveal.

Morgan, who retired two years ago as Chief Financial Controller for Limbe Leaf Tobacco, is reported to have attended interviews at Escom in Blantyre last week.

However inside sources said government is bent on giving Tembo the job on a silver platter as he missed the first round of interviews and only attended the second round of interviews.

Morgan Tembo: Accomplished profesional

“Morgan Tembo is now the favourite to land the job and it’s now a fore gone conclusion that they want to offer the job to him. But this is unfair as more deserving people who have worked at Escom for a long time could have done a good job. But because he is connected to politicians, he will get it,” said our source.

“With the interim management, now Escom has started posting profits after a long time and there are no longer politicians getting contracts anyhow because of the stringent measures put by the Financial Controller Betty Mahuka. Why can’t they just trust Escom with these people? Politics will disturb the recovery process Escom is under going through now,” added our source.

Since taking over office in April this year, President Mrs Joyce Banda has been rewarding members and close relatives of Tembo with various public posts.

Tembo’s son, John Tembo Jnr was appointed Deputy High Commissioner to the United Kingdom while Morgan’s wife, Nancy Tembo was appointed Commissioner of the Electoral Commission and John Biziwick was appointed Commissioner General of tax collecting body Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA).

It is also reported that Tembo himself is expecting an appointment as State Second Vice president and has met President Banda several times on the issue. However, President Banda is not ready to appoint a second vice president and is “compensating” him with various positions to his family members.

Tembo, as leader of opposition has been soft on President Banda’s government saying there is nothing to oppose as her policies are popular with the masses.
