Mota Engil commits K140m development package in five districts

Mota Engil Africa today announced a further US$350,000 (K140million) Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) commitment of improving the lives of local communities in selected areas in five districts of Chikhwawa, Neno, Mwanza, Balaka and Blantyre.

Mota Engil Africa announced the package during a consultative meeting held in Blantyre with District Commissioners, Traditional Leaders, Senior Health Workers, Education Managers and Councilors from these districts.

The company is committed to complimenting existing efforts in these districts in the areas of health, safety, Water and Sanitation, Education, Energy and Environment and Sports Development.

The communities to benefit are from nine Traditional Authorities with target recipients of six Health Centers or Clinics, 28 Education facilities and about 128 villages near Mota Engil work areas in these districts after needs assessment was conducted to identify the needs in these areas.

Among others, the company will provide electricity at Chisi Trading Centre in T/A Chigaru in Blantyre rural with an aim of improving the economic situation of the people around this area.

The company will electrify Chithumba Health Facility, provide Solar Power to eight schools in Balaka and Mwanza and provide an Electricity Generator at Lisungwi Community Hospital in Neno to support the Maternity wing.

Mota Engil Africa will also provide assorted medical items and medicines, education items such as library books, exercise books, chalks and desks while some schools will receive desktop computer sets and library shelves as a literacy enhancing initiative.

It will also support sporting activities by providing netballs, footballs and sports kits to some schools in the five districts.

The company will also continue supporting the Tree Planting season for 2014/15 in the five districts by empowering community action to sustain tree planting program.

Reacting to the development delegates to the Consultative Meeting welcomed the continued efforts by Mota Engil Africa in bettering the lives of the communities they work in since the company’s establishment in Malawi over 20 years ago.

“We are happy that they are continuing with their Corporate Social Responsibility in all areas of Malawi not necessarily where they are working in. This is a welcome development and will make a lot of difference,” said Atanazio Chibwana, District Commissioner for Blantyre during the meeting.

T/A Chapananga of Chikhwawa also thanked Mota Engil Africa for not imposing the help on the communities but by first consulting with the custodians of development areas.

“This is very good. We are very delighted that we had a choice of what we wanted in our areas based on the list they had on offer,” said T/A Chapananga.

This development will be done in phases and the first one will cover months of October to December where a total of K140million will be spent on local communities.
