Mota Engil subcontract to two companies on Njakwa- Livingstonia Road construction

Mota Engil Construction Company which is constructing Njakwa- Livingstonia Road says it will subcontract two companies to speed up the construction works of the project.

According to Hastings Shaba of FN & Partners whose consulting company is working with Mota Engil on the project, construction of the road has delayed due to rocky and mountainous terrain which the road has to pass through.

“Mota Engil has been working on the rocky mountains to shape the road, a process that has consumed much of the time but now plans are underway to bring in two more contactors to speed up the construction works,” said Shaba.

He said Mota Engil Construction Company spent most of its time working on a difficult terrain through Livingstonia Mountains.

According to Shaba, the contractor has identified two contractors whom he did not disclose their names saying discussions are underway to have the additional firms approved.

He, however, made an assurance that the undisclosed sub-contracted firms are expected to be on the designated sites within the next 21 days once all the paper work is finalized.

“The two contractors will start working on the road from Phwezi and Mhuju respectively and will meet mid-way with Mota Engil which started construction from Livingstonia,” Shaba added.

Shaba however expressed concern over some people who are still residing along the road reserve areas despite having been paid compensation for relocation to pave way for the road construction project.

“I am appealing to such people to relocate quickly for the smooth running of the project. We hope that authorities will assist in relocating these people,” he said.

In his remarks, Director of Public Works for Rumphi District Council, Allan Chitete said the council would not hesitate to use force to evict the people if they do not relocate on their own.

“It will be improper for the project to delay because of some few individuals who do not want to relocate. We will use whatever means to remove those people who still reside along the road reserve,” said Chitete
