Mother jailed for pouring boiling water on daughter

A  38-year-old woman in Malawi’s central district of Ntchisi is going to prison for up to 15 months  for injuring her daughter’s private parts with boiling water.

The 14-year-old daughter  Ndaziona Banda, a  Standard Six pupil, received severe burns .

Police Constable Austin Daudi, prosecuting,  said  the incident  happened on October 3 2011 at Chiwembe One Village, Traditional Authority Kalumo  in the district when the girl arrived home late from school after knocking off at 2  o’clock in the afternoon and escorted a friend to her home.

Daudi told the court what when the daughter arrived home at about 7 pm,  “her mother got  furious with her and immediately took some hot water and poured it on her legs.”

The Ntchisi First Grade Magistrate’s Court found Margaret Faki Banda – of Chiwembe One Village, T/A  Kalumo in the district  – guilty of the offence on Tuesday.

Sentencing,   magistrate Alex Kantiki disregarded her  plea for leniency that she suffers from high blood pressure.

Prosecutor  Daudi said he’s pleased with the sentence and happy the mother will go to prison and can no longer hurt her daughter.
