Moyale set up Standard Bank finals with Eagles

Moyale Barracks FC on Sunday set up a final clash with Blue Eagles in the Standard Bank Cup after beating their brothers-in-arms Red Lions 3-1 in Lilongwe.

Eagles were the first to book the place in the finals on Saturday after beating Civo United in post-match penalties.

But the Mzuzu-based soldiers secured their place in the finals with a sterling perfomance in their bid to defend the cup.

Moyale weathered the early pressure and took control of the match which saw Steven Mkandawire scoring the first goal in the 31 minutes after converting home a well curved cross.

But Zomba-based Lions equalised six minutes before half-time through their skipper Steven Katema.

The balance of the game changed immediately after resumption in the second half when Moyale scored an early goal, barely one after the restart through Love Mitengo’s beautiful header.

The Kaning’ina soldiers increased the tally through dangerous raider Gaston Simukonda who netted with a classic header.

The third goal spurred Moyale to maintain their dominance and appeared to take an even stronger grip despite finishing with ten men when Andy Simukonda was shown a red card for a bad tackle.

“We are very proud to have reached the finals of the Standard Bank Cup again,” said coach for Moyale Nicholas Mhango soon after the game.

He said the finals with Police outfit will be a good battle.

“Finals are always tough games. I’m sure we’ll be better for that particular game,” he told Nyasa Times.

The venue for the K15 million Standard Bank Knockout Cup final will be decided by the bank’s customers through voting, according to the financial institution.

The customers will also vote for the best journalist for the tournament.
