MP Kaliati under fire from constituents over water problems

Parliamentarian for Machinga Central Shaibu Kaliati has come under fire from his constituents because he has failed to provide water which he promised during campaign for the 2009 elections.

Kaliati was at pains to explain to Radio Maria reporter Blanzio Chingwalu, who quizzed him on Saturday,  to explain why 1 500 people from John village should use one borehole whole others using unhygienic swamps.

One of the villagers Mike John who said he  voted for Kaliati tore the MP into pieces and described him as a failed lawmaker  who has not lived to his promises.

“Nobody can be happy when there is no water. Life needs water. Every household requires water. Water is life. Water is a big problem here,” said John.

Kaliati: Water problems

“We all depend on one borehole. When we complain to the MP, he just says the boreholes will come. MP has made unfulfilled promises. He has never brought any boreholes here or even asking other people to do so for us,” he added.

On his part, Kaliati confirmed the water problem in the constituency.

But the reporter demanded the MP to tell the people what he was doing about the problem.

“The village is big. It has a great population. People queue for water and those who feel are taking long to draw the water, leave the queue and go to swamps which are unhygienic. The swamps put the people’s lives at risk,” said Kaliati.

But the reporter was not satisfied with Kaliati’s response and told him not to defend himself but offer solutions.

Then Kaliati said, “There is a programme to sink four boreholes in this John village.”
