MP  Yeremiah proposes presidential council to run Malawi after court sanctioned polls

Lone Alliance for Democracy (Aford) parliamentarian Yeremia Chihana says there is urgent need to establish a presidential council to run the country in the event the Constitutional Court annuls the May 21 election orders a fresh poll.

Yeremiah Chihana:  We need presidential council

Chihana says the presidential council should comprise of members from all political parties.

“There is need for political parties to join hands in achieving peace. This is the period the country needs peace and unity,” he said.

He said the country will need six months to prepare for a fresh election in the event the court has ordered a new poll, saying this is the period the presidential council will have to run the affairs of the country.

  19. What is the constitution saying? All i know is so many cooks spoil the soup. Especially malawian cooks they will fight in the kitchen everyone wanting to be the head chef..lol but its good to start debating and conversation on post judgement scenario. We don’t want to be taken by surprise n and have a leadership vacuum should it go the opposition way.

    1. Good point Moya…..apparently there is no provision for a rerun in our constitution so if the constitutional court nullifies the election results it would mean that we will have a fresh election.

      Now the fresh election that we may have can technically be called a rerun if we end up with the same candidates we had in the May election competing against each other again.

      Now, this is where Jeremiahs proposal of a presidential council comes in…….because if the court nullifies the May election results due to rigging by the current governing party how can Malawians trust the same people to be in charge of a fresh election?
