Msowoya says Aford needs fresh convention or burst
Former Alliance for Democracy’s (AFORD) publicity secretary Dan Msowoya has called Minister of Sports, Youth and Culture Enock Chihana as an “illegal” president of Aford following the party convention on September 5 and 6 in Mzuzu which ended in commotion after some disagreements .
Msowoya told Nyasa Times in an interview Tuesday that Chihana wasn’t elected by the legitimate delegates to the convention.
“He was elected by people he [Chihana] ferried from Rumphi Central and a few thugs from Karonga,” claimed Msowoya.
Former acting president of Aford, Godfrey Shawa and others, obtained an injunction to stop Chihana and his newly elected team from transacting any business in the name of Aford.
“It was all a mess,” he said. “We need to organize a fresh convention to put the AFORD house in order.”
According to Msowoya, the manner in which the convention was conducted is not healthy for AFORD as a party.
“People no longer have the respect they had for AFORD because of the behaviour we showcased,” he said. “We need to get people’s trust and confidence back.”
Msowoya said Shawa camp obtained the injunction to nullify the elections that illegally took place after Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) officials had left.
Chihana was elected as party leader with 515 against Msiska’s 45, who was voted in absentia, Gladson Kaseka Munthali collected 15 votes while Shaba withdrew from the race.
