Mukhito fired, Dzonzi new Malawi Police chief

In a dramatic turn of events, new Malawi President Her Excellency Joyce Banda, Commander-in-Chief of Police has fired the Inspector General of Police Peter Mukhito.

Mukhito was appointed by late president Bingu wa Mutharika. He had earlier served as the presidential guard commander.

He was described by Mutharika as the “finest Inspector General of Police” Malawi has ever had.

Madam President has since appointed Police Commissioner Loti Dzonzi as the new police chief.

Mukhito: Sacked

Dzonzi, a born again Christian, a preacher and a motivationalwriter, is touted for his level headedness among his fellow police officers aswell as the community at large.

“This is the perfect choice of an IG if the nation and thepolice as a whole is to be reformed. We hope that the new president will fillher staff with people of Dzonzi’s calibre,” said a senior police officer at thePolice Area 30 headquarters in Lilongwe.

Dzonzi is Banda’s first appointment since she was sworn in aspresident on Saturday to replace Mutharika, who appointed Munkhito.

Munkhito who comes from Chiradzulu district was one of themany appointees seen to have been based on tribal lines after he jumped severalother senior police officers to take up the position.
