Mukhito launches four-day Northern Region security blitz

Homeland Security Minister Peter Mukhito has kicked off a gruelling four-day inspection tour of Malawi’s Northern Region, on a mission to scrutinise security operations, infrastructure projects and service delivery across the area.

Mukhito, joined by Deputy Minister Norman Chisale, launched the tour in Karonga on Monday, beginning with a visit to the Department of Immigration and Citizenship Services before heading to inspect ongoing projects at Karonga Prison.

While at the prison, the minister dug into government coffers to donate K2 million towards the purchase of additional manual brick-making machines, aimed at boosting production and supporting income-generating activities for inmates.

Mukhito praised prison authorities for their efforts in promoting self-reliance behind bars, hailing the initiative as a positive step towards rehabilitation.

The minister is also set to engage directly with the Karonga community over the disturbing rise of mob justice, urging residents to respect the rule of law and work hand in hand with police rather than take matters into their own hands.

Mukhito will now press on to other districts across the region as part of the tour, assessing operational challenges on the ground and looking to strengthen cooperation between security institutions and the communities they serve.
