Mutharika bemoans vote ‘irregularities’, says MEC weren’t ready

Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) presidential candidate Professor Peter Mutharika on Tuesday blasted the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) of incompetence in delivering credible tripartite elections, citing “irregularities”.

Speaking after casting his vote at Goliati in Thyolo, Mutharika said he was saddened with reports of violence by disenfranchised voters.

He said the irregularities have not inspired confidence in the credibility of the polls.

“I am very excited to vote though under very difficult circumstances. MEC promised that they were ready to conduct tripartite elections but I am surprised that we having these problems,” he said.

Mutharika arrived at Goliati polling centre just before 2PM as bees briefly interrupted his voting.

The final election results are not expected until Friday.

Nearly 7.5 million voters were called on to vote in the poll.
