Mutharika fails to attend scheduled Egyptian cultural night

President Peter Mutharika on Friday evening failed to turn up for a scheduled cultural night in Lilongwe.

State run Malawi Broadcsting Corporation had for two consecutive days been running announcements that Mutharika would attend the ceremony.

However, Mutharika changed mind last minute and instead delegated vice president Saulos Chilima. No reasons were given.

In his speech at the ceremony, Chilima said the cultural bonds between Malawi and Egypt is what cements the relationship between the two countries.

“Egypt remains an important partner because it helps Malawi in its development endevours,” he said.

He said Egypt has helped Malawi in areas of Agriculture and Tourism, among others. The Egyptian ambassador to Malawi said Egypt has plans to construct its own embassy offices in the country.
