Mutharika hires new diplomats: Mhura to US, Voice Mhone to Germany

President  Peter Mutharika has hired new diplomats to head Malawi missions in Germany, United States and other nations which have seen  chairperson for the Council for Non-Governmental Organizations in Malawi (CONGOMA), Voice Mhone being  appointed.

According to a statement issued by George Mkondiwa, Chief Secretary to the Government, President Mutharika has hired lawyer  Necton Mhura to be Malawi  diplomat in United States to replace Steve Matenje .

The President has also appointed Mhone as diplomat to Germany.

According to a statement, Thoko Banda who was approved by Parliament’s  Public Appointments  Committee to be Malawi envoy to EU in Brussels to take over from Dr Brave Ndisale, who picked a new lucrative job, will not be heading to Brussels.

Instead, Banda will be Malawi ambassador to Zimbabwe.

Recently appointed ruling DPP vice president Ted Kalebe will instead be  Ambassador to Belgium and the European Union.

Other appointments include,  Customer Service Manager at Standard Bank Malawi Chimango Chirwa who is heading to Ethiopia and the African Union.

The appointments have  also seen former Zomba Central Constituency Yunus Mussa hired as Ambassador to Egypt.

Professor of Nursing and  Midwifery at University of Malawi Kamuzu College of Nursing Dr. Chrissie Kaponda has been appointed  High Commissioner to South Africa.

Former  Director of State Residences  Edward Sawerengera will be heading to Brazil to replace Dr Francis Moto and former  Nsanje North  Frank Viyazi, High Commissioner to Mozambique.

All appointments, expect that of Banda, will be subject to approval by parliament.

  2. This is very funny. The President and his Cabinet talks of gender equity and here we are just one woman. When shall Malawi leadership WALK THE TALK. Women are more productive and not just sex symbols or dancers. What is the impact of 50/50 . There are many educated well experienced women but being rejected. Shame Mr President.

  15. Mr. Mutharika, is it not really surprising that as an educated man, you have no understanding of what “democracy” is all about. Where on earth is the intra-party democracy when YOU appoint people into positions? Should it not have been your so called members who choose who their leaders will be? These appointments just mean one thing. You, just like your brother, are intent on getting the “yes bwanas” in your ranks.

    Secondly, it confirms what has been doing the rounds lately in drinking places that you really don’t want Saulos Chilima, a guy from the Ntcheu to one day succeed you. Otherwise stories doing the rounds say that it will be either Chaponda or Mwanamvekha whom you prefer, and the common link being that they are Lomwes. How disgraceful!

  25. Akapolo a Mutharika, embassy inali kale during Kamuzu Banda’s era . Masiku ano if you are a Malawian diplomat you better have your own money. It’s not as glamorous as it used to be. Dlplomats have gone for months without salaries amakhala ngati Akapolo eni eni. Bola kumangolima ku mudzi ndithu.

    Malawi has no foreign currency now, how then will Mutharika finance the missions.?

  28. These jobs are just great on paper. When they get there all they do is welcoming politicians at the airport like chaperones. Terrible.
    Then remuneration is in dribs and drabs, compounded by our government’s financial mismanagement.

  29. I am very concerned that our embassies are filled by people who represent the present not the country. Our constitution should urgent change to reflect who can be appointed as an ambassador. Let us carefully think of introducing a degree course on international relationship so that for one to be appointed in the foreign mission should have at least a degree in this area plus some experience working in the public sector. You can see now that these jobs are filled by people who failed were not elected as parliamentarians (Ntaba, Kalebe and Yunus) are such examples. MIM can start offering this course .

    You guys from Central Region, please carefully be on the look out the strategy of APM. All DPP top politicians are being sent to foreign services and this means end of your political career. I am informed APM is planned to tell Dr. Jean Kalirani to resign as an MP so that he can be sent to the embassy. Federalism is the answer. Each region will have its own Governor of the bank, its own Army General and Police Chief.

This is a strategic move because as a defense lawyer, he is making the government side look totally unprepared so to shut him down he has been offered the diplomatic post which if Mhura has any sense will not take it because he makes a lot more money as a defense lawyer than an ambassador in the UK or USA

  39. I hope Dr Moto gets posted to Brussels. He is better suited for that post than ka Thoko Banda. Dr Moto is a great professional with extensive diplomatic experience. Thoko Banda is not even close .

  40. The list is full of appeasement of pple who are deemed to be blue replacing pple with experiences. Prof Kaponda is not the calibre to be a diplomat mzimayiyu ngwankhanza kwabasi. So Voice Mhone the noise you were making was aimed at buying I wondered the silence recently

  43. Cosmetic appointments. What I know is Malawi is not a united nation no matter how much one wants, this is a very divided country which must be split to save future civil war. When Tamani spoke he did as a southerner. If Tamani has God in mind he should condemned Bingu & now Peter for advancing & promoting tribalism. Very foolish Priest. Pliz if one is close to Tamani tell him that he is too foolish. Why is that all southerners don’t support Federalism if indeed the country is united? Did God send Bingu to introduce Quota System?   51. Professor Moto, former principal at chanco mwamulakwira. dont recall pple just for the sake of being seen to have made changes. Moto is more experiencd as a diplomat than some of these new appointees.

    1. But there is no monopoly in these posts. Much as he has experience, he started somewhere to gain that experience. Others will also gain the experience over time……..the problem is that there seem to be no proper criteria for such appointments in Malawi ..
      So Mr/s M’banthu, even if it was you appointed, you would gain the experience after 5 or so years…..ena alowe m’bwalo ( no grudges to Dr Moto, I respect him a lot)

    By the way i was watching the Muhlako wa Alomwe i dint see any face of artists of Lomwe background. Where are you Manganya, Winiko, Nanyoni, Mulelemba, Overtone Chimombo… coz this year Muhlako lacks authenticity mared by poor performed lomwe. did you see how thne new Inkosi Mbelwa and his group performed … what about Kyungu… very nice dignified dance.   59. Can the government pls stop the treegate in lilongwe city. City officials are wantonly cutting down trees in our streets making lilongwe more dusty and bare. The government should seriously investigate the origin of such orders.

Titha kumati apa tikukonza, if we react succumbing to pressure we should expect grave mistakes, i just see these appointments as appeasement moves, some individuals here do not even qualify, even me too i don’t, but let’s not just delegate anthu on national issues because they have been loyal to the party so long.

  62. Worst form f appeasement. Diplomatic appointments ought to be on merit not on political appeasement and patronage. The people being recalled are either carrer diplomats(Bernard Sande, Earnest Makawa etc) or civil servants (Charles Msosa, Francis Moto etc). The current list does not inspire hope at all. Malawi is slowly going to the dogs!! What a shame!
