Ambassador Jackson is on a tour of a few African countries including Malawi.

According to State House, President Mutharika pledged Malawi’s continued cooperation with the US , saying  the relationship will continue to benefit Malawi economically, politically and socially.

The Malawi President pointed out that most of the US initiatives in the country have uplifted  so many Malawians including those in rural areas.

“I have in mind for example the Peace Corps Volunteers that continue to come to Malawi to treat our sick in hospitals, to educate our children in schools and work in many other sectors. I look at the AGOA initiative which I appealed that it should be extended and many others” said President Mutharika.

Mutharik in his discussions, informed Ambassador Jackson of the progress his administration has made following the first ever US-Africa leaders’ summit which somehow moved his government to undergo a major rethink considering the revelations of how much as a country Malawi was losing out on investment opportunities.

The Malawi leader informed the Secretary of the investment compendium which his government formulated immediately after the summit whereat was noted are over 200 hundred bankable investments projects that foreign and local investors could exploit to help in transforming Malawi’s economy.

He also appealed to the US government through Ambassador Jackson to consider reviewing the market quota of Malawi tobacco in the US to give Malawi’s ‘Green Gold’ more market access.

Mutharika was confident that the steps his administration has taken since the US-Africa summit should have made a positive impression with the Barack Obama administration.

The President also  stated that bold steps his government has undertaken in the Public Service reform agenda and the Public Finance Management Reforms should be viewed positively in the US .

While in the country, Ambassador Jackson also met young Malawians who participated last summer in the Mandela Washington Fellowship.

The Mandela Washington Fellowship, part of President Obama’s Young African Leaders Initiative, empowers young African leaders through academic coursework, leadership training, mentoring, networking, professional opportunities, and support for activities in their communities.

The young leaders described their initiatives and accomplishments in various areas such as: creating businesses, promoting entrepreneurship and on-the-job training, empowering women and girls to fight Gender Based Violence and harmful traditional cultural practices that exacerbate the spread of HIV/AIDS.

Jackson also visited several sites to appreciate the U.S-Malawi cooperation. On April 10, he visited Bwaila Hospital in Lilongwe where U.S programs (and particularly PEPFAR , the U.S. Presidential Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief) support the strategic integration of ante-natal, TB and HIV treatment, care and prevention services.

He also visited an Integrating Nutrition in Value Chains (INVC) site in Lilongwe Rural.

No matter for how long Malawi remains recepient of donor funds,we have to come to realities and find out what has gone or what is going wrong in our country since nationhood 51 years ago? The fact of the matter is that we have lucid manpower, but we are or we have foolishly and short sightedly misused it to benefit a section of the chosen ones belonging to the majority who accidentally happen to come from south and central provinces, these people are placed on strategic positions despite their poor qualifications. This is where successive governments of our land have tragically failed to… Read more »

I don’t doubt APM’s speech was purely parroted and he has no idea what he was talking about. We need an economist to take this country forward not this sleepy puppet. This will be another lost 5 yrs of comedy. Malawi’s challenges are too enormous to tackled by a slow thinker like APM.

For some reason I fail to understand our president. It is either lack of knowledge or proper information being fed to him by his advisers. He continues to peddle the compendium which has no back bone none what so ever. How can investors be attracted to a country that has unreliable water and power supply? How can we expect investors to come to Malawi if our infrastructure is in shambles? These are the factors which investors look at before taking a risk. Security in the country is out of hand and here is a president who continues to talk about… Read more »

What should we take Mr President? When coming from Ethiopia, you told us that Malawi can do without donors: and now you are happy holding discussions with 2nd in command of the African- American Ambassodor to Africa, whch is whch? You are praising the Americans for AGOA and asking for a larger quarter of Malawian tobacco in America, why not leave them and concetrate on the no aid or trade alone whch our reporters wrote that you discus-sed with one of the war torn country Burundi, for Malawi to do without aid. Choose one thing Mr President! Either to be… Read more »
