Mutharika misses at crucial AU summit, Malawi ex-president Joyce Banda attends

President Peter Mutharika was conspicuously missing at the African Union  (AU) summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia as he battles for his political career following nullification of Constitutional Court nullification of his re-election, a matter which he is appealing at Supreme Court.

The Constitutional Court ruling for a fresh election in July has shocked the 79-year-old president who has not been seen in public since the judgment was delivered last week.

Also missing on the agenda at the AU summit which ended on Monday is Malawi’s political crisis which threatens the country’s fragile democracy and its weak economy.

Meanwhile, the African Union (AU) has unanimously elected President Paul Kagame as the new chairperson of one its new agencies that will drive the continent towards vision 2063.

Kagame was elected chairperson of African Union Development Agency- New Partnership for Africa’s Development (AUDA-NEPAD) Heads of State and Government Orientation Committee (HSGOC).

Former president Joyce Banda attended the meetings and has been making key contributions and engaging stakeholders.

The AUDA-NEPAD is an integral component of the AU which brings both institutions together to work effectively, and Kagame said it’s everyone’s duty to make it happen.

The election that was held at the 37th HSGOC session also came with the Launch of Africa Innovation Outlook III and launch of Agenda 2063 report which was presented by the President of Cote d’Ivoire, Alassane Ouattara.

This was alongside the ongoing High-Level Forum at the AU Summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, where several African heads of state will draw security plans and negotiate implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA).

President Kagame will start his two year term as chairperson of HSGOC from 2020-2022, a job that he is familiar with as a former chairman of the AU.

“The African Union Development Agency-NEPAD looks forward to his great leadership and guidance,” NEPAD said in a statement.

In his acceptance remarks Kagame said the transformation of the NEPAD Planning & Coordinating Agency into AUDA-NEPAD is affirmation that NEPAD is the right vehicle to drive transformation on the continent.

“I can only pledge to do my best, in concert with all of you, to uphold this organ’s founding principles,” President Kagame said.

The Africa Agenda 2063 has seven aspirations and overall continent aspirations stand at 33%.

The seven aspirations include: A prosperous Africa based on inclusive growth and sustainable development; politically integrated continent on ideals of Pan-Africanism and Africa renaissance; governance, democracy, respect of human rights and rule of the law; peaceful secure; strong cultural identity, reliance on an African potential; drive Africa as a strong and influential global partner.

  1. ALL THOSE PEOPLE ESPECIALLY AFRICAN SO-CALLED LEADERS ARE JUST IN ETHIOPIA TO ENJOY THEMSELVES WITH LOVELY PROSTITUTES AND BEER WASTING PEOPLES’ MONEY WHILE BACK HOME CHILDREN AND OUR OLD PEOPLE ARE STARVING.JUST WAIT THESE CORRUPT SO-CALLED LEADERS WHEN THEY COME BACK HOME,WHAT THEY WILL BRING WITH THEM ARE BOTTLES OF HARD STAFF TO ENJOY BACK HOME WITH THEIR FRIENDS.SHAME!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  2. JOICE BANDA IS DOING WELL TO REPRESENT MALAWI. LEGALLY, SHE IS THE TRUE PRESIDENT OF MALAWI. APM IS JUST ACTING AFTER THE STOLEN ELECTION. EVEN 2014 DIDNT GIVE US A LIGIT PRESIDENT AS PER 50+1 ACCORDING TO THE JUDGEMENT.
SO JOICE IS STILL OUR PRESIDENT

  3. And the tipexed mp honourable Lazarus to rise up and say a big No to his election. We are not young to be foolished by politics greed

  4. And the tipexed mp honourable Lazarus to rise up and say a big No to his election. We are young to be foolished by politics greed

  5. Right now nobody really cares what Joyce Banda does. She loves the spotlight and photo-ops but does nothing for Malawi. Malawians are focused on the events in Malawi and speculating on what our future holds…….our minds are on the New horizon ! So stop hero- worshipping for once!

  6. Wakuba athawa yekha. He stole elections from JB. He cannot face her. He knew JB will be there. APM has issues. His behaviour is weird. He hatred , anger, resentment.

  7. He did not attend because AU meetings are just a talk shop. He will attend UNGA and other meetings that will bring development to Malawi. I wish him all the best as our current President. Well, if he loses in July, I will equally wish the then President al the best. What we must understand is that we are in this boat called “Malawi” together. If Mutharika does not perform, we all suffer. As for Joyce Banda, I wish her all the best. I hope her attendance will bring some much-needed development to the country.

  8. For once, Mr Tippex has made a wise choice! You cannot go and have a meeting with duly elected colleagues while back home a Coury has just nullified your election into high office!

  9. If APM has not fully recovered from the shock of unexpected Concourt ruling it is those who must have been lying to him that ‘DPP and MEC’ had nothing to worry (that share the blame) about since all international observers had already endorsed the ‘free and fair’ status of his re-election. Let’s pray that he recovers quickly because between now and 3rd July he remains the ‘official’ head of state of the Malawi nation and his guidance into ‘THE THIRD REPUBLIC’s ERA is of the utmost importance for ‘smooth’ transition. Even the ‘NGWAZI YA MYAYA’ had to come to his senses that there is no such thing on earth as ‘ETERNAL PRESIDENCY!!’. MCP one-party system reluctantly accepted ‘THE WIND OF CHANGE’ and so did ‘UDF’ and so must DPP. It’s part of the production of radical change. The caterpillar accepts metamorphosis to become a batter-fly, from a crawling slow worm to a beautifully coloured creature. May be it’s time for Malawi to fly after ten years of sleeping in an enclosed cocoon of mediocrity!

    1. Well said ‘Chiga’ I couldn’t have put it better than you have. Unfortunately Mutharika is busy creating the environment for demonstrations demanding a rerun of the elections, Sadly even by his defiance Mutharika risks his own arrest for embezzlement and other high crimes whilst in office. And even more harmful to him and the entire Mutharika family the seizure of their looted assets here in Malawi and abroad.
Mutharika should wise up as the whisperers who whisper lies into his ears like Mphepo, Dausi are looters like him whose own survival in politics will end if Mutharika concedes and their crimes be prosecuted.

  10. Are you campaigning for this useless cash-gate suspect ???? Waste of time and very courageous for JB to avail herself as representing Malawi. She went there for her own agenda I presume.. Good riddance

    1. Do you hate her? Unfortunately the world is not listening to you and whatever you can say will not change the minds of those who love and respect her. You have your own miserable life to live Jonas.

    2. Has Joyce Banda said that she is representing Malawi, or has she been invited by the AU as representing Malaw?

      1. The lady JB is a harden criminal who has survived on lies and deceit.
Let her account for the Presidential Jet she sold, the huge cash brought to her on the Nigerian President’s Jet by an Indian and other corrupt deals.

    3. Where cash-gating is concerned I see no difference between APM and JB needless to say though that JB is smarter than the professor. It doesn’t require rocket science intelligency to notice that.

      1. My friend you are wrong. JB is not more intelligent it is because APM and Goodall were in a rush to start corruptly awarding tenders they decided not to make JB accountable for selling the Presidential Jet, and other highly corrupt deals JB made. JB has survived by being aligned to the right people at the right time, but is not known for her intelligence at all.
