Mutharika sneaks out of Malawi

Malawian President Bingu Wa Mutharika ‘sneaked’ out of the country to unknown destination in a dramatic manner, raising speculation around the 78-year-old’s health.

Mutharika flew out of Kamuzu International Airport (KIA) at morning around 6.45 am today aboard his French made Falcon 900 presidential jet in what eye witnesses said was a ‘dramatic and emergency’ operation.

Impeccable sources said the President was rushed to the airport with a heavy military and police escort, more than the security escort that he uses whenever he is travelling either officially or privately.

Mutharika: Flown out

“It was very confusing to see that kind of security and no one was allowed to visit the VVIP area and it was the Immigration Officer-in-charge a Mr Mankhwala who cleared the President and his entourage,” said our inside source at KIA.

The source said it was difficult to see the condition the President was in as the place was completely cordoned off by security personnel especially from the Malawi Army.

“Everyone was confused, people did not know what was happening, his plane was brought near the VVIP area and there was too much security details on the runway and around the plane, so most of us could not see the physical condition the president was when boarding the plane but he has been flown out in the last hour or so,” added our source.

However, it is not known where the President is heading to as not many people were made aware of the destination of where the presidential jet was flying to.

“Others are saying that he is going to Nigeria, others are saying he is going to Europe but to tell you the truth I don’t know where he is heading. The truth is that he has left the country in this dramatic way,” said our source.

Another airport official who was on duty when the President was being flown out confirmed the head of state has been flown out of the country in a dramatic manner.

“It’s true that the president has been flown out. But nobody was allowed near the plane. It was only our boss Mr Mankhwala who cleared the presidential team and did not tell anyone of what was happening,” said the official.

Mankhwala slammed the phone down when the subject was introduced to him for a comment.
