Mwanamveka used Mulhako to snatch my wife – Kavina

Former Secretary to the Treasury Joseph Mwanamveka is accused of snatching a youthful wife belonging to Chikondi Kavina from Likangala in Zomba, a development which led to the collapse of the family.

According to The Weekend Times of Friday, Kavina said in a recorded interview that his wife (Jean Chiwaya) started going out with Mwanamveka in 2010 during celebrations of Mulhako Wa Alhomwe in Mulanje.

He said his wife confessed to have been linked to the economics technocrat with the assistance of his mother-in-law.

Mwanamvekha: Wife snatcher

Kavina alleged the sexual affair between Mwanamveka and his wife was facilitated by her mom who is daughter to Traditional Authority Chikumbu because she was the one who was calling her to go to Mulanje regularly for no apparent reason.

“At first, I received a call from my mother-in-law, advising me that my wife should go to Mulanje to help with some family chores where she spent almost a month. Then she took her to Mulhako Wa Alhomwe where she introduced her to Mwanamveka,” the tabloid quotes Kavina.

According to the tabloid, the trend continued until she confessed that she was in a relationship with Mwanamveka and that he had been financing her needs to sustain the relationship.

“I actually overheard my wife talking to Mwanamveka where he jealously warned her not to sleep with other men within the Mulhako top gurus. I couldn’t believe it because I was standing right beside her,” Kavina is quoted as having said.

Kavina said the saddest part was that it was his wife’s mother who was the go-between.

“I think the mother loves money and material things very much. Being a chief, she should have been at the forefront safeguarding our traditions which are founded on strong marriage foundations but this one was doing the opposite,” he said.

He said although she confessed to having the relationship and promised to stop, she continued behind his back.

Kavina said, his wife would bring latest cell phones and substantial amounts of cash and clothes provided by Mwanamveka.

“At one point when he was in Ethiopia he arranged that she should collect the money from the filling station in Limbe. I knew Mwanamveka was abroad,” he said.

However, this time round the wife started behaving strangely to the extent that she was going to Blantyre often, according to Kavina.

“At one time, she told me that she was going to Blantyre to collect fees from her father where she returned home with new clothes plus K5, 500. But when I called her father to say a thank you for the school, he expressed ignorance of the development. Worse still, when I attempted to ask her about his source, she started challenging me that she had more money than me.

“This resulted in an argument, which forced her to leave for her home village again. This time around, she left with my first born child, Shammah, arguing that I was being harsh on him,” he is quoted to have told The Weekend Times.

When Kavina tried to ask his wife why she had developed a strange behaviour, despite the love he had for her, she revealed that she had started going out with Mwanamveka who was giving her money.

“She revealed to me that Mwanamveka gave her K4, 600 at the beginning of the relationship then K7, 000,  then K8, 000 and K5, 500. She claimed that she got it from her father for school fees,” said Kavina.

He added: “This other time, she told me that she was going to attend the wedding of Hastings Maloya only to find her in Limbe with brand new shoes and clothes.”

Mwanamveka refused to comment on the matter when he was drawn for his side of the story.

“I cannot comment on that,” he said.
