Mwendayekha Building Construction boss arrested over Malawi cash-gate

The boss of Mwendayekha Building Constructiona Mr Kumwenda has been arrested by police for allegedly defrauding government through dubious means in the cash-gate scandal.

In an ongoing investigations into the massive looting of public resources at Capital Hill, Mwendayekha is suspected to be among companies who were conduits of alleged dubious payments to siphon about K1.5 billion between April and September this year.

Ministry of Local Government is suspected to have been paid to about 29 companies including Mwendayekha, Ziuya Constructions and Mzenga Constructionevery month during the April-September period.

Mwendayekha Building Contractors who got K321 million, Ziuya Constructions was paid about K340 million and Mzenga Construction who received about K303 million.

In a related development,  Ministry of Tourism chief tourism officer Leonard Kalonga has been charged with theft and money laundering for allegedly defrauding government of K84 million (about $210 000) through dubious means.

Kalonga was rearrested on Monday this week and he is already facing similar charges in the High Court.

And businessperson Esnat Ndovie has been charged with inducing a public officer, Kalonga, to perform duties said to be corrupt in nature.
