Mzuzu accident death toll up to 16
Another death has been recorded following the fatal road accident that claimed 15 lives around Msiki area – just outside Mzuzu City – on Friday, Mzuzu Central Hospital officials have confirmed.
About 15 people died on the spot and about 30 others are still battling for their lives at Mzuzu Central Hospital after a tipper which lost control swept passenger cars.
According to Mzuzu Police publicist, Martin Bwanali, the accident involved a tipper – Ashkok Leyland – registration number BQ 9942 which, after failing to negotiate corner hit three other vehicles in row that were heading the opposite direction.
The First couple has, meanwhile, described the Friday accident as “one of the worst national tragedies” according to a statement by State House Press Secretary Mgeme Kalirani.
The President has directed that government will provide coffins and transport to transport the remains to their respective homes.
On Sunday, two other activities one involving a minibus and another involving a National Bus registration number BQ 4500 happened around Bolewole area, around Chiweta, in Rumphi.
The conductor of the bus died on the spot, according to police.
