Mzuzu Uni’ graduate Nomo Cooper discusses name and ‘Normal Aspect’ album

Upon hearing the name Nomo Cooper, one is tempted to relate it to South Africa’s Fifi Cooper but according to the Malawian artist born Greshno Noel Amos, there is no relation.

Nomo Cooper

Before changing the name to Nomo Cooper, the 27 year old Mzuzu University graduate who started music in 2005 traded under the moniker “Lil X”.

Speaking to Nyasa Times, Nomo Cooper said the name change came when he switched genres from Hip Hop to Afro Pop and R&B.

“I used to rap in my Secondary school days at Malosa. I had to change from Lil X to a good name that didn’t sound too Hip Hop,” he said.

He further disclosed how he struggled to come up with the name Nomo Cooper.

“To begin with, growing up I always wanted to become a celebrity. A celebrity who lives a normal life because back then celebrities were
associated with immoral behaviors such as drunkardness and promiscuity. So in 2009, I came up with Nomo Cooper. Nomo written in
Chichewa but having the meaning of normal and Cooper which is one of my father’s names.

“So you can see that I started using the name before Fifi (Cooper) and my name actually has a deeper meaning,” he explained.

He then disclosed that all is set for his debut “Normal Aspect” album release on 2 September.

“The album is done and people should expect something positive in this album. The title is self-explanatory, I am focusing on normal aspect of life which is thinking positive. I want people to get over stress and other struggles when they listen to this album,” he explained.

Some of the songs in the album include Ukanadwiwa featuring Kelvin Sings, Undikonde remix featuring various artists, Letter and Mai Mai featuring Zephy. ‘Letter’ and ‘Mai Mai’ music videos are currently
enjoying airplay on local TV stations. Mai Mai premiered on Times TV on 14 August.

The album features urban music heavyweights such as Tricky Beats, Dare Devilz , Blage, Kelvin Sings, Ken Lo, Rex, Phil J, Zephy Oldies and Crystal.
