Namakhwa makes u-turn: ‘I am still DPP’

Thyolo Central Member of Parliament Kingsley Namakhwa has said he has not resigned from the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) to join the ruling People’s Party (PP).

Namakhwa told Nyasa Times on Friday that it was sad and unfortunate that he was quoted in the media that he had joined the PP.

“I have never switched allegiance. I am still DPP,” said Namakhwa.

The lawmaker said he is not a political prostitute who could just quit DPP anyhow without reasoning.

But Namakhwa’s story was written by various media houses and DPP after the story came out to confirm his defection.

DPP spokesperson Nicholas Dausi said Namakhwa has just exercised his political right in a democracy.

Later DPP’s deputy Publicity Secretary, Bon  Kalindo  told Nyasa Times that Namakhwa’s departure will give others, willing to join the party, opportunity to take up the challenge.

Achita bwino achoka, anzawo apeze malo (It’s good he left, others will fill the void). It only shows how democratic Malawi is; he is allowed to exercise his right to join any party of his choice,” said Kalindo.

PP’s deputy Publicity Secretary, Ken Msonda also is on record saying the party welcomed Namakhwa into the party fold.
