National Bank of Malawi donates K40 million towards Mother’s Fun Run to boost maternal healthcare in Mzimba North

National Bank of Malawi (NBM) plc has donated K40 million towards the 2026 Mother’s Fun Run (MFR), strengthening efforts to improve maternal and newborn healthcare in Mzimba North.

The Mother’s Fun Run is a safe motherhood initiative championed by Nation Publications Limited (NPL), which mobilises support from strategic partners to procure life-saving medical equipment and supplies for public health facilities.

This year’s edition of the initiative is targeting a total of K500 million to support health facilities operating under the Mzimba North District Health Office.

Speaking during the handover ceremony in Blantyre, acting managing director of Akiba Commercial Bank, a subsidiary of NBM plc, Wezi Olivia Mwazani said the bank’s support for MFR stems from its potential to create lasting social impact within communities.

NPL deputy chief executive officer Alfred Ntonga thanked NBM for its generous donation, revealing the funds will go towards procuring sterilisers, patient monitors and suction units for the new theatre at Mzuzu Health Centre, popularly known as Mapale.

The donation comes as Mzimba North continues to grapple with severe shortages of ambulances, infrastructure, medical equipment and supplies, as well as water, sanitation and hygiene facilities.

The district also lacks a dedicated district hospital, placing significant added pressure on both Mzuzu Urban Community Hospital and Mzuzu Central Hospital to meet local healthcare demand.
