National Bank of Malawi expands scholarship scheme to health students

National Bank of Malawi (NBM) plc has awarded five scholarships and six excellence awards to top-performing students at Kamuzu University of Health Sciences (KUHeS) under its Mo Excellence programme.

The awards form part of NBM plc’s broader commitment to providing 59 scholarships and 41 Vice Chancellor’s List awards to students across universities in the country, including the Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences (MUBAS), University of Malawi (UNIMA), Mzuzu University (MZUNI), Lilongwe University of Agriculture and Natural Resources (LUANAR), and Catholic University (CU).

Speaking during the presentation on Friday, NBM plc Chief Executive Officer Harold Jiya said the bank’s sponsorship of students reflects its belief in the crucial role education plays in developing the country’s human resources.

“We believe that education is a foundation of economic development, as it helps to break cycles of poverty, uplift families, empower communities and help in nation building.

“So, we believe helping these students will help them to finish their education while empowering the best and brightest,” Jiya said.

He added that an educated nation would contribute meaningfully to the country’s development, noting that the number of beneficiaries is expected to double each year.

In his remarks, Atusaimwe Kasola, a KUHeS student, thanked NBM plc for the timely support.

“I warmly welcome this support, as financial support is hard here at the university. Hence, we thank National Bank of Malawi plc for this support,” Kasola said.

Echoing Kasola’s sentiments, KUHeS Vice Chancellor MacPherson Mallewa described the support as a game changer for students.

“We have received two types of support today; those that demonstrate excellence in their performance and another one which is the scholarship. These are the kind of support that students require.

“So, to have National Bank of Malawi plc support us gives us gratitude, excitement and hope that this is the kind of help needed from the corporate world,” Mallewa said.
