Nations Msowowa named Malawi newsmaker of the year -FEI

Ministry of Finance Public relations Officer, Nations Msowoya has won the Free Expression Institute ‘Newsmaker of the Year’ a ward.

Msowoya was named winner of the award at a Freedom of Expression Awards Night at Crossroads Hotel in Lilongwe on Thursday.

He was selected for the award following a selection process facilitated by the Free Expression Institution in which media houses were asked to vote for newsmakers (individuals or institutions) who, over the past 12 months, proved to most accessible.

The University of Malawi (Chancellor College Political Science Department) came second, while Malawi health Equity Network Executive Director, Martha Kwataine, was voted in third place.

The rest of the top ten newsmakers were the Office of Director of Public Prosecutions, Henry Chimbali (Public Relations Officer, Ministry of Health), Mr. John Kapito (Executive Director, CAMA), Associate Professor Edge Kanyongolo (Faculty of Law, University of Malawi, Chancellor College), Thomas Chafunya (Spokesperson, National Audit Office), Medon Matchaya (District Health Officer, Nsanje) and. Justin Chimera Malewezi (Former Vice President).

Free Expression Institute also asked media houses to vote for organisations that difficult when it comes to facilitation of passage of information.

Twelve organisations were singled out for not always been cooperative with the media in the past 12 months. The organisations are the National Assembly, Electricity Supply Commission of Malawi (ESCOM), Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB), Road Traffic, Ministry of Education, Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA), Immigration, Roads, Authority, Judiciary, Ministry of Sports, Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital, Police.

Speaking after receiving his trophy an ecstatic Msowoya thanked his superiors for creating an environment in which he is able to perform well, saying “working with the media is not easy.”
