Nde’feyo adds four new categories to UMP Awards

Probably the only relevant and consistent locally organised festival and award event, Urban Music Party (UMP) Festival and UMP Awards return on November 6th at the BAT Ground in the commercial city of Blantyre with new categories added to the list.

According to Nde’feyo, the UMP Awards this year will have 11 categories after the producers have added four new categories namely Album of the Year, Best Hip Hop/Rap Act, Best Dancehall Act, Best R&B/Afro-pop Act, Best Music Video Director and Best Gospel Artist.

“The Festival and Awards keep growing in every edition, and once again we want to reward excellence. This year the Awards will be of spectacle to watch. The addition of more categories only cements the Festival and Awards as the biggest and hottest urban music event in Malawi,” comments Khumbo Kabuzi Munthali, the event’s co-executive producer.

The organisers further disclosed that slightly different from previous editions, the shortlisting of performers this year has changed as artists will have to apply via this email address [email protected] and applications have to include a biography, audio and video links as well as social media links.

Meanwhile, the organisers are looking for applications from volunteers to take the positions of stage managers, stewards and artist liaison officers.

For the first time since inception, the UMP Festival and UMP Awards were last year held at the BAT Ground on November 8th, with a historic attendance of over 3,000 people from Blantyre city and across the country.

The 2015 Festival was also characterized by spoken word, rap battle, a fashion exhibition and live music performances headlined by Zambia’s Chimzy Kelly as well as Malawi’s own cream including Piksy, Gwamba, Fredokiss, Sangie, Bucci, Trumel, Blakjak, Diktator, Martse, Janta, Dali and Trap Squad, among the many local acts.

The 2015 edition awarded Artist of the Year to Gwamba, Song of the Year to Martse’s “Mwano” feat Kell Kay, Best New Artist to Sangie, Producer of the Year to Tricky Beatz, Music Video of the Year to Janta’s “Divorce” and Lifetime Achievers to Mafunyeta and Criminal A.

UMP is an event that celebrates Malawi’s urban music, lifestyle and culture and incorporates the UMP Awards, a ceremony that recognizes Malawi’s exceptional urban music talent.
