Ndilowe named Malawi state chief secretary, Aironi head spy
President Joyce Banda has made new appointments following the arrest of at least 11 former senior Malawian government officials, including Cabinet ministers, on Monday for allegedly plotting a coup to prevent then-Vice President Joyce Banda from assuming power following the death of the former president in April last year.
Those detained included the current Economic Planning and Development Minister Goodall Gondwe, who was Mutharika’s Finance Minister, and Chief Secretary Bright Msaka, who was also Chief Secretary in the Mutharika government.
Announcing the new appointments after an emergency meeting of President Banda’s cabinet was called at official Kamuzu Palace in the capital Lilongwe, Presidential press secretary Steve Nhlane said Mrs. Hawa O. Ndilowe has been appointed Chief Secretary to the Government.
Experienced civil servant Willie Samute is named Deputy Chief Secretary tothe Government but will will now be responsible for both the PublicService and Cabinet Services
The appointments has seen former Inspector General of Police, Joseph Airon who was recently appointed in the official Commission of Inquiry into the death of late Mutharika, being appointed Director General of National Intelligence Bureau.
President Banda has maintained former Army Commander, General Mark Chiziko as National Security Advisor.
