Neno DC’s office blocked, staff protest against non-payment of salaries

Staff at Neno District Coucil on Wednesday closed offices including that of the district commissioner in protest against non-payment of their salaries for three months now.

The irate workers closed the gates leading to the offices.

Neno district commissioner Memory Kaleso Monteiro confirmed that she failed to work on Wednesday because some members of staff closed the offices.

“I was surprised that the vehicle that comes to pick me up did not come. When I inquired I heard some members were protesting and they closed our offices,” she said.

She said the staff, who include guards, those who sweep in markets and revenue collectors, will be paid their salaries soon.

The DC expressed surprise with the industrial action, saying the staff did not give notice.

In Nsanje, staff working on a youth centre stormed the offices of the council demanding that the council pays the contractors working on the youth centre and stadium.

The contractors are not paying the workers claiming the council is not paying them.

Director of Public Works at Nsanje District Council Chimwemwe Mhango said he could not comment on the matter because he was travelling to Blantyre.

However some people have expressed concern over the substandard works on the youth centre and stadium as cracks are emerging even before the construction works finished. Last month, the council paid out K77 million to the contractors.

Do not blame the DC, blame who declared Neno to be a district. It won’t take long for Likoma too to stage a strike because both districts have very little base for provision of income for their salaries.

O…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..O . . . People are created to be loved . . . . . . Things are made to be used . . . The reason why this world is in chaos is because people are used and things loved. You see . . . . . . This DC was expecting someone to drive her to the office. Implying they have fuel to take the DC around for a month, a year but no money to pay workers? Paradoxically . . . . . . market and other fees are duly collected, and presumably submitted. ………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….. Sadly .… Read more »
