New Malawi top prosecutor appointed: Mary Kachele replaces Kalemba

Mrs Mary Kachale has been announced as the new Director of Public Prosecutions  (DPP)  recplacing firec Bruno Kalemba, Office of President and Cabinet announced on Friday.

Acting Chief Secretary to the Government Willie Samute said in a media statement that President Peter Mutharika has used his constitutional powers to hire Kachale as new DPP.

“The President of the Republic of Malawi, His Excellency Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika, in exercise of the powers conferred upon him by section 101 of the Constitution of the Republic of Malawi has appointed Mrs. Mary Kachale as the Director of Public Prosecutions,” reads the statement madeavailable to Nyasa Times.

Kachale has served as Senior Assistant Chief State Advocate in the Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs and holds a B.A. degree (Honours) from the University of Malawi and a Diploma in International Protection of Human Rights from the Institute for Human Rights, Abo Akademi, Finland.

In 2009, she was awarded an LL.M. in Public International Law at the University College, London; in 2010 she commenced her PhD in law at the same university.

Kalemba had just been cleared by Attorney General,Kalekeni Kaphale, from the allegations of  professional misconduct and abuse of office .

Cashgate suspect-cum-witness Oswald Lutepo, a former executive member of the then governing People’s Party (PP) of Joyce Banda, last week wrote the AG’s office asking for an investigation against Kalemba, former Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs Fahad Assani and hired prosecutor Kamudoni Nyasulu for allegedly forcing him to write witness and caution statements to implicate private practice lawyers Ralph Kasambara and Wapona Kita in the Cashgate cases.
