Nguluwe hit the winner as Evirom beat Tigers 1-0: Malawi TNM Super League

Evirom on Thursday launched their pursuit to move out of the relegation zone in the TNM Super League when they beat Azam Tigers 1-0 in a match played at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre.

The win is a relief after the club’s their disastrous outing to the Central Region last weekend.

The Super League rookies lost 3-1 to Civo United and 3-2 to Kamuzu Barracks on Saturday and Sunday respectively.

Zikhole Nguluwe scored the vital goal through a spot kick to collect maximum points for the rockies.

The Blantyre-based side has been anchoring the 15-member table and now has nine points from 14 games.

Evrom FC Coach Mario Gadaga was excited with the win.

“This is a sweet victory because we are drawing closer to the first round. I must commend my boys for fighting hard until the last whistle, “said Gadaga, who bowed twice after the last whistle as a sign of praising God for their victory.

On the opposite camp, dejected Azam Tigers team manager Robin ‘Abambo’ Alufandika stood in disbelief for five minutes on their bench despite the last whistle before trekking into the dressing room.

However, Tigers coach Leo Mpulula blamed his striking force for lacking the killer punch and stressed the need to beef up his squad in the second round.

“As l have been always complaining that our striking force is not sharp, l will repeat the same because you saw in today’s game failing to score even with a keeper to beat r,” said Mpulula.

Evirom missed several scoring opportunities as well. The notable chance came in the 23th minute when Chikondi Mpulula failed to kiss the back of Tigers net with a yawning goal after beating the defence and the goalkeeper.

Tigers, who were more organized in the second half pressurized Evirom but Yamikani Naluso and Clement Ngombe lacked composure to shoot on goal.

The moment of joy for Evirom came in the 76th minute when Harold Zulu was given an agriculture tackle by Bashir Maunde in the danger zone forcing the referee to point on the spot kick where Zikhole managed to beat Nenani Juwawo in goals.

The Kau-Kau boys tried to find an equalizer but Acid Sumbeja was too good for them in defence as he tamed their strikers intelligently.

There were two awards for player of the month of July and August presented after the match.

Evirom striker Wongani Zulu was voted player of the month of July while Azam Tigers goalkeeper Nenani Juwawo scooped player of the month of August.

Each player received an award, a cheque worth K15,000 and a TNM black shirt.

Man of the match went to Ignacious Makoloni for Evirom FC.
