Nkhatabay man, 68, in cooler for sex assault on a minor

Malawi Police in Nkhatabay are keeping in custody a 68 year-old, Silale Kaunda, on allegations that he defiled a minor, age 12, at Mpamba Trading Centre in the district.

Nkhata Bay police public relations of officer (PRO), Ignatius Esau, confirmed the development saying that on January 28, 2017 the victim was passing by Kaunda’s house and he [Kaunda] invited the victim into his house where he defiled her.

In an attempt to keep the girl’s mouth shut, the suspect offered the girl K300.

The issue came to light after the girl’s mother noticed some walking difficulties in her daughter and when quizzed further, the girl revealed that she was defiled.

The matter was reported to Nkhata Bay police and the victim was referred to Mpamba Health Centre where defilement was confirmed and later the suspect was apprehended.

Kaunda who comes from Tayawaka Village in the area of Traditional Authority (TA) Timbili in the district will soon appear in court where he is expected to answer charges of defilement which contravenes Section 138 of the Penal Code.
