The Miss Malawi 2011 beauty pageant  will be held at Capital Hotel in Lilongwe on Friday December 23 but  the winning queen will not go home with the grand prize of a car as earlier announced, Nyasa Times has learnt.

Organisers of the country’s top beauty competition, Artistic Agency, have since confirmed the development to Nyasa Times.

Initially, Miss Malawi 2011 was supposed to receive a BMW automobile sponsored by Mnena Gaming, but the sponsor pulled out and started its own pageant, the just ended Miss Warm Heart of Africa.

Following the pulling out of Mnena Gaming, the organisers were forced to seek other sponsors and told Nyasa Times that “Mike Appel & Gatto would be giving the winner a Chevrolet car.”

However, in an interview on Wednesday, Artistic Agency director Vitu Kamanga disclosed that “the sponsor [Mike Appel & Gatto] has been silent on the pledge.”

“We have been trying to get in touch with the CEO, but I think he has been very busy. I hear right now he is out of the country,” said Kamanga adding “It’s doubtful that something will happen in two days as regards the car.”

He revealed as of Wednesday, the agency had K500,000 meant to be given to the winner. Kamanga, however said there were other people that have shown interest to up the prize money and give out other prizes.

“But it’s okay, we are moving on and the preparations are at an advanced stage,” he said.

There are fourteen girls, drawn from the country’s southern, central and northern regions, competing for the Miss Malawi title. The winner is also expected don a specially designed and expensive crown courtesy of National Lotteries Group.

Meanwhile, beauty queens from other countries will be gracing the Friday event and expected to arrive today (Wednesday) is Miss Zimbabwe 2011.

“We’re expecting to have Miss Zambia in the country on Thursday or Friday,” said Kamanga, also revealing that “a high delegate from Kenya is expected to jet in on Friday.”
