Football Association of Malawi (FAM) Competition Manager Gomezgani Zakazaka said the sponsorship would not be increased for this year because the budget was made in current financial year 2016-2017.

Zakazaka said the K60 million sponsorship increase as announced by Sports Council board chairman would not be effected this year.

“The sponsorship has remained the same because the budget was for this year. Hopefully next year they will consider raising it,” he said.

“It’s a fact that the cost of living has gone up. The value of the package cannot be the same as when it was introduced in 2008.”

Meanwhile, registration of the cup has started at regional level and the high cost of living has forced the organisers to regulate the number of teams

Southern Region Football Association League Vice-General Kingsley Simbeye appealed to teams to come forward and register as they would not entertain any other team after reaching the number 30.

“We will not allow any team after getting 30 teams unlike in the past where it was open ended,'” he said.

The presidential cup is part of a K120 million government initiative to develop sports in the country.

Football and netball associations are biggest beneficiaries with K60 million and K30 million package respectively.
