No regrets for jumping on sinking ship- Masanjala

  • …player exodus looms at Escom

Escom United caretaker coach Alex Masanjala has declared he does not regret taking up a coaching offer at the struggling outfit, saying his job is to help young players.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Nyasa Times after drawing blank from central region, where his side was eventually condemned to the lower leagues, the seasoned coach said he does not have any regrets jumping on a sinking ship.

“As a coach, my job is to assist players regardless of the situation they are in. Actually, it was a challenge for me to take over a team that was struggling to remain in the league. I would have loved to keep the team in the Super League but from what I observed when I came here, things had already reached a point of no return,” said Masanjala.

The former Civo United coach, however, heaped praise on players in his squad, saying the team would bounce back into the top league if it maintains the same players.

“If these players are maintained, the team will just stay for a season in the lower league before bouncing back,” he said.Players exodus

But the big question is: Will players like Bernard Harawa, Noel Mkandawire, Manasseh Chiyesa, Malumbo Gondwe and others accept to play in the lower league?

Gondwe, who is captain of the side ruled out the possibility of him and most of his colleagues playing in the lower league.

“We came from the there (the lower leagues) and we cannot go down again. This is time to move on,” said Gondwe flanked by some of his colleagues.
