Nomads beat resilient Mponela, Silver tumbles: Malawi TNM Super League

After successfully defended the K25 million Standard Bank and vowed to launch a K65 million TNM Super League championship campaign, Mighty Wanderers on Sunday struggled to beat resilient Mponela United in a tight match played at Balaka Stadium.

Mponela United had a couple of chances to take the lead but their captain Frazer Menyani and Mude Jeffrey squandered their opportunities.

The nomads also showed some flashes of brilliance  but their striking force was an able to get a winning formula in the first half.

In the second half both sides displayed beautiful football but no goal was scored until the Nomads notched in the winning goal in the dying minutes through their new signing Abraham Kamwendo formerly of Blantyre United.

After the final Nomads and Mponela United turned the field of play into a war zone as they exchanged blows leaving Mponela United captain Menyani injured in the process.

The scenes of violence continued outside the stadium as faithfuls of Wanderers started pelting stones at Mponela United bus smashing a screen in the process.

It took the courage of Nomads Supporters Chairman Yona Malunga and Police to help Mponela leave Balaka stadium.

The team went straight to Balaka Police where they gave a statement before going to Balaka District Hospital for check up of some of the injured players.

Meanwhile, Balaka police has launched investigations into the matter.

Elsewhere in the super league, defending champions Silver Strikers had a rough ride at Chitowe where they salvaged a 1-0 loss to Mafco F.C Courtesy of Emmanuel Chipeta’s strike.

At the Mzuzu Stadium, Kamuzu Barracks thumped bottom paced and relegation threatened Mzuzu United 4-1 through goals from Wonderful Tumeo, Weld Nkuliwa, Joel Chipofya and Ben Hojani. Mzuzu united scored their consolation goal through Peter Katsonga.

Epac F.C returned from the southern region empty handed after losing to Blantyre United 2-1 on Sunday.

Sparrow Msowoya and Yamikani Tambala were on Target for Mphembedzu as Bt United is popularly known while Epac “AKA” Njenjete scored their loan goal through Rodrick Douglas.
