Nomads reclaim summit, but nothing is settled as first round enters final week

Wanderers cling to slender lead as Silver Strikers and Bullets close inWith just one week remaining before the conclusion of the first round of the Malawi FDH Bank Premiership, the race for top spot remains finely poised, as the country’s leading clubs jostle for position heading into the closing fixtures.

Mighty Wanderers made the early move on Saturday afternoon, defeating Zomba-based Red Lions 2-1 at Mpira Stadium to climb back to the summit of the table on 29 points from 14 matches.

It is a result that will have pleased a Nomads side keen to head into the final round of first-half fixtures with momentum, though there is little room for complacency at the top.

Wanderers’ lead stands at a single point over second-placed Silver Strikers, who retain a game in hand – a fixture that could prove decisive in shaping the destiny of the first round.

That opportunity arrives on Sunday, when Silver Strikers host Goshen City Dedza Dynamos at Silver Stadium in Lilongwe. Victory would return the Bankers to top spot and pile further pressure on Wanderers as the first half of the season draws to a close.

The picture is complicated further by the presence of FCB Nyasa Big Bullets, who remain firmly in contention.

The reigning champions travel to Dedza Stadium on Sunday to face Luanar Mitundu Football Club, in what shapes up as another significant test for a side eager to close the gap on the league’s summit.

With the three leading clubs separated by only a handful of points, the concluding fixtures of the first round carry considerable weight.

Every point secured between now and the weekend’s final whistle could prove instrumental in determining which side heads into the second half of the campaign occupying pole position.

Saturday’s results (Week 14)

Mighty Wanderers 2-1 Red Lions

Creck Sporting Club 3-2 Ekhaya Football Club

Moyale Barracks 2-2 Kamuzu Barracks

Masters Football Club 1-2 Blue Eagles Football Club

With the summit still up for grabs, the unfolding contest between Mighty Wanderers, Silver Strikers and FCB Nyasa Big Bullets promises a compelling conclusion to the first round of the season.
