Nsanje and Chikwawa unite behind roadmap to unlock region’s economic potential

Co-chairperson of the Nsanje and Chikwawa Socio-economic Development Trust, Gift Trapence, has insisted that the completion of key infrastructure projects is essential if the Shire Valley districts are to maximise their contribution to Malawi’s national economy.

Speaking during the Trust’s People’s Conference in Chikwawa, Trapence singled out a handful of flagship projects he described as critical to the region’s development: the Chapananga Road, the Thabwa-Fatima Road, the Shire Valley Transformation Project, and the long-proposed university at Bangula.

Conference aims to unite the region behind a shared roadmap

The conference was organised to discuss and formally adopt the Shire Valley people’s roadmap on service delivery and infrastructure development – an initiative aimed at giving residents of Nsanje and Chikwawa a unified plan to present to government and development partners.

Chief calls for unity in push for development

Speaking at the same event, Senior Chief Mulilima of Chikwawa stressed the importance of residents from both Nsanje and Chikwawa speaking with one voice when advocating for development initiatives, arguing that a fragmented approach would only weaken the region’s bargaining power.

The Nsanje and Chikwawa Socio-economic Development Trust was established in 2020, with its core objective being to contribute to meaningful and sustainable development for the people of the two Shire Valley districts.
