Differences have rocked newly opposition Nthanda Congress Party (NCP) following the decision by some of the top officials to announce that the party has disbanded to join Malawi Congress Party (MCP) a head of the 2014 elections.
The development comes a day after NCP interim vice president Loudon Malingamoyo announced that the party and its entire executive have joined MCP.
But addressing journalists in Lilongwe on Friday, NCP interim general secretary Stanley Chakhumbila Khaila dismissed allegations that the party has disbanded saying Nthanga will go ahead with the convention as earlier announced.
“It’s not true; we would like to inform Malawians in strongest terms that we have not disbanded,” Khaila said.
“The truth is that at our National Executive Meeting (NEC) on August 7 we agreed that the party should not disband and that we should not join MCP. We believe that those people who have joined MCP they have done so as individuals not as the party,” he explained.
Malingamoyo told Malawi’s Daily Times newspaper on Friday that that they have written MCP but they are yet to get response from the party.
“We filled the letter to MCP two days ago at the MCP secretary general office and we are yet to get any response but we don’t see any reason why they should reject us” Malingamoyo was quoted as saying.
However, in an interview, Malingamoyo described comments made by Khaila as baseless, saying as far as he is concerned the party has disbanded and has joined Dr Lazarus Chakwera led MCP.
“Members that have joined MCP are the real owners of the party those that have remained don’t know what the party is all about,” added Malingamoyo.
Apart from Malingamoyo, other NCP members that have joined MCP include, interim chairperson David Kambauwa, Treasure General Mzati Thunde and publicity secretary Jacob Banda.
During the media briefing Khaila was accompanied by NEC member Amos Chikhadze who is also the chairperson of organizing committee of the party’s convention and publicity secretary Bertha Chidothi among others.Follow and Subscribe Nyasa TV :
