‘Orphanage’ boss nabbed for sexual assault on girl, 13
Police in Nkhotakota on Tuesday arrested a 51 year prospective orphanage director on allegations that he has been having unlawful sex to a 13 year old girl since December 2011.
Ironically, the girl (name withheld) happens to be his cousin’s daughter and the sexual assault has been happeninf at his cousin’s house, Nkhunga Police Station Public Relations Officer Sergeant Labani Makalani told Nyasa Times.
Makalani said the alleged perpetrator Robert Mzingano Phiri is currently in Police custody.
Phiri retired from the then National Seed Company in 1994 and trekked to South Africa for greener pastures.
He was in the process of establishing an orphanage called Hope Centre within the district.
According to Police, a Community Child Protection Officer for Kasitu Zone in the area of Traditional Authority Kafuzira in the northern part of Nkhotakota district spilled the beans after villagers wanted the matter swept under the carpet and save Phiri from the long arm of the law.
Makalani said the suspect’s Cousin identified as Mr. Suwedi Banda, who is a Teacher at Kafuzira Day Community School, welcomed Phiri in December last year from South Africa in order to establish the said Orphanage.
