APM should have left the mamwene – Paramount – status with the Mkhumbas of Phalombe. The aLhomwe were not really consulted, and were, in the main, against Ngolongoliwa becoming the mamwene. For one thing, there was not a good reason to install the title on this Johnny-come-lately. It was as if APM just wanted to bring the chieftainship near home, to Goliati. But, rather than heed advice, APM went ahead anyway, and made the big mistake of stripping Mkhumba the mamwene status, for the flimsy rationale that the paramount chieftainship should be rotating among the aLhomwe.
