Parliament blows K15m for weekend social games

Malawi Parliament last week blew up a whopping K15 million to enable over 20 MPs to travel to Zambia by road to play social football, netball and chess.

The games were played on Saturday.

Speaker of Parliament, Henry Chimunthu Banda, pressed National Assembly financial controller Chikondi Kachinjika to make available K15 million for the trip.

The order was too much for Kachinjika as the now politically-volatile Parliament is financially and administratively struggling, according to inside sources.

Chimunthu Banda: Austerity?

“I can confirm to you that Parliament blew about K15 million to enable the MPs to travel to Zambia to play international friendly matches with the Parliament of Zambia.”

“Parliament has no money. The financial controller was at pains to raise that money because Parliament is financially challenged. How he managed to raise the money, he can explain himself. The money was for fuel and allowances among others.

“All the MPs were paid external travel allowances including staff like public relations officer Mr Ian Mwenye,” said sources.

The teams travelled by three buses. The buses belong to Parliament.

The MPs recently asked for 137 per cent salary increment.
