Parliamentary Committee tours Chiwamba Health Centre

Parliamentary Committee on Agriculture on Friday toured Chiwamba Health Centre in Traditional Authority Chimutu in Lilongwe to appreciate the installed solar peddle flow pump which is saving communities surrounding the clinic.

The tour was led by the committee’s chairperson Joseph Chidanti Malunga who thanked Member of Parliament (MP) for the area for the initiative made in making sure that the hospital has potable throughout.

He urged his fellow MPs to visit their constituencies and know what their people are lacking in terms of development projects.

Charles Razika, Director for Manchuran Global Suppliers – an agent for Moving Water Industries (MWI) – told Malawi News Agency (Mana) that this is a new concept in Malawi because the first installation in the country was in 2002.

He said the fist pump was installed in Chiradzulu whilst the Chiwamba one was installed in 2007 and only worked for five years then stopped due to lack of maintenance.

Razika said Member of Parliament for Lilongwe North East Member of Parliament (MP) Maxwell Thyolera approached him to see if they could rectify the problem and make sure that the health centre has potable water.

“Like other local solar pumps, these pumps filter and chlorinate the water so that when it gets to the other end it very safe and clean,” he said.

Razika said the pump is very effective and durable if well maintained and that one pump costs over MK14.5 million.
