Patricia Kaliati back as minister
Maverick politician Patricia ‘Akweni’Kaliati has made it again into the cabinet after President Peter Mutharika appointed her minister.
The outspoken former information minister will head the ministry of gender, children, disability and social welfare.

The silver-tongued politician is a prominent member of the governing Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and a loyalist to Mutharika.
Kaliati was first minister to be sacked when Joyce Banda took power after the death of Bingu wa Mutharika in 2012.
In the wake of Bingu wa Mutharika’s death, Kaliati had held a press conference saying Banda had no right to take over as president – despite what the constitution said.
Mutharika has appointed a leaner 20-member cabinet as a cost cutting measure.
The cabinet is largely comprising of technocrats.
