‘Peter Mutharika has American citizenship’

President Bingu wa Mutharika’s brother and heir apparent, Peter Mutharika’s  eligibility for presidential candidacy in 2014 has triggered controvery over claims that he  has a citizenship of  United States of America .

Former director of political affairs in Mutharika’s ruling DPP, Harry Mkandawire, told Capital FM Straight Talkprogramme on Tuesday and, the President’s brother who is an expert in  international law and comparative constitutional law needs to be probed over his dual citizenship.

Peter Mutharika: Dual citizenship?

The US embassy could not immedietly comment on whether Mutharika  has American citizenship.

But Mkandawire said there were doubts over Mutharika’s Malawian citizenship.

“This man maybe holding a dual citizenship,” said Mkandawire.

He further accused the Mutharika brothers of being out of sync with the life of impoverished Malawians because they have lived most of their lives in the diaspora.

The Mzuzu based politician, who is now People’s Party deputy secretary general, further called the Mutharika brothers as “Matchona.”

A senior political and administrative lecturer at the University of Malawi, Mastapha Hussein is on record saying Mutharika’s “eligibility should be viewed in the context of his being Malawian, he would be above 35 years of age by 2014, and he has not been convicted of any criminal activities for the past seven year.”

Malawi’s laws however, do not allow dual citizenship and it is widely speculated that Peter Mutharika obtained US citizenship whilst living in the US and hence, had renounced his Malawian citizenship as is required by law.

Mkandawire said Mutharika – minister of foreign affairs – is not supposed to be in cabinet owing to his American citizenship.

The DPP has also stated that Mutharika is a Malawian citizen and would run for president as a Malawian citizen and not an American one.

Mkandawire further attacked President Mutharika saying he exhibits his “Matchona” factor through his public utteraces: “He always says you Malawians I don’t understand you.”

And of course Mutharika  has  recently likened Malawians to ‘chickens’ that make noise on simple issues like the twin problems of  forex and fuel.

Mkandawire also said the President wants his brother to inherit power to cover him up for his sudden wealth including the recent erection of his lavish mansion at his sprawling Ndata Farm in Thyolo.

Mkandawire: Mutharika matchona's

“He may be used by his brother so that whatever has been happening in the pass 10 years should not come out,” said Mkandawire.

Besides, he said “we are not a mornachy” to have presidential power to rotate within the same family.
