Peter Mutharika lying on money blockage – Malawi gov’t
Malawi government has accused Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) president Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika of making naked lies over reasons for his withdrawal of sponsorship of Southern Region Football League (SRFL).
Mutharika was sponsoring SRF to the tune of K5 million per season and there was one more season left in the three-year contract.
He was also bankrolling all the three regional women’s football leagues amounting to K18 million (K6 million each league).
The DPP leader announced the withdraw of sponsorship this week, with his personal assistant Ben Phiri attributing the development to government’s move to block Mutharika from accessing his finances.
But government spokesman Moses Kunkuyu said there is no any bank account of Peter Mutharika that government has blocked, saying only bank accounts belonging to former president late Bingu wa Mutharika have been frozen as they are under contention in court.
“It is not true that government has blocked Peter’s bank accounts,” said Kunkuyu who is Minister of Information and Civic Education.
Kunkuyu said Mutharika should explain himself on such claims.
University of Malawi’s Chancellor College political scientist Joseph Chunga pressed Peter to disclose if sources of the sponsorship for the regional leagues came from the frozen Bingu’s estate.
Mutharika also blamed political interference as the other reason for the withdraw of sponsorship.
The claims were also dismissed as baseless callous propaganda by the DPP leader.
