Petra warns Malawians against multiple registration in voters roll

Leader of the opposition Peoples Transformation party (PETRA) Kamuzu Chibambo has warned potential voters from falling into temptations of registering more than once,  saying  doing so is a serious offence and punishable by law.

Chibambo, who is a practicing lawyer,  has made the warning in a statement made available to Nyasa Times in which he is congratulating those that have so far registered with the Electoral Commission in readiness for the May 20, 2014 Tripartite Elections “despite the technical hitches that were encountered”.

He says he hopes the experiences gained will ensure smooth and efficient execution of all subsequent Phases.

Chibambo: Register once

“With the commencement of Phase 2, PETRA wishes to join the State President Madame Joyce Banda in urging all eligible Malawian citizens; and that all eligible non Malawian citizens but who have been ordinarily resident in Malawi for a continuous period of 7 years as per Section.77 of the Republican Constitution to register afresh so you will formalize your right to vote in 2014,” he says.

Chibambo is also urging all members of his party in the South, East, Center and North to register  at the designated registration centers when the registration exercise reaches their area, constituency or district.

“Please note that your vote fellow Malawians and our guests will usher in a new Malawi and therefore it is absolutely essential that we all register,” he says.
