Makawa, who was also a known hotelier and long time businessperson, died on Monday morning at Blantyre Adventist Hospital after a short illness.

Many could not contain themselves but shed tears.

The body was taken to her residence in Namiwawa with a police escort, as a convoy of cars drove slowly from College of Medicine to Namiwawa.

The late Makawa studied hotel management at the Malawi Institute of Tourism (MIT). She also did some hotel management training in Switzerland.

She worked for Malawi Hotels and Kamuzu College of Nursing in the catering department before going full time into family businesses founded by her late father, Alexander John Ashan.

She managed Boadzulu Holiday Resorts in Mangochi in the past and some of the her businesses include Kambiri Lodge in Salima and Shire Highlands Hotel in Limbe, under the Alexander Hotels brand.

The late Makawa from Matapira Village, Traditional Authority Mazengera in Lilongwe is survived by a son, John and daughter, Eda

Nyasa Times Senior Photographer Jeromy Kadewere took some photos at College of Medicine up to the late Makawa’s Namiwawa residence.
