Police arrest 40 in crackdown on criminals
Police in Blantyre have arrested 40 suspects and seized assorted items following a sweeping exercise they conducted recently in townships of Manase and Chilomoni.
Assistant Public Relations Officer for Blantyre Police, Sergeant Lameck Thembachako said the exercise was done a day before independence celebrations.
He said the exercise was aimed at following up different cases reported against unknown criminals and trying to recover stolen items in the process.
Thembachako said 40 suspects were arrested in the move and various kinds of items seized within the localities of the apprehended.
He said some police officers worked on tips from the public while others decided to move bench by bench in different questionable places adding that; “Some of the suspects decided to desert their merchandise and ran away for fear of being arrested.”
However, he said police officers managed to arrest 40 suspects and recover assorted items among them three DVD players, TV screens, Amplifiers and cellphones.
According to Thembachako, the suspects are currently in police custody pending court appearance to answer different charges.
“Of the 40, 6 will answer charges of robbery, 14 will answer charges of rogue and vagabond while 20 will be charged for being found in possession of property suspected to have been stolen,” said Thembachako.
He said investigations were underway to link the recovered goods to the owners who had lodged their complaints to police at various times.
