Police arrest 5 for Sana Cash & Carry theft

Two Omega Security guards and three men  are in police custody waiting to answer theft charges in court for suspecting them to have stolen assorted items from Sana Cash and Carry in Blantyre.

Police have identified the guards as Gersom Numero, 38, from Malemia in Zomba and Chalera Makaniko, 25, from Chapananga in Chikhwawa,

Blantyre Police Assistant Public Relations Officer, Sergeant Lameck Thembachako said on the night of 16th July, 2012, well wishers tipped police at Chilomoni Sub-station that there were people offloading different items at Mbwelera Rest house in the City.

Thembachako said the police followed up the tip and found the three suspects, namely Aaron Kaliati, 18, from Chiwalo in Phalombe, Jimmy Potani, 18 from Mlilima in Chikhwawa and Steve Chazemba, 27, from Chiwalo in Phalombe in possession of 40 crates of eggs, 96 plastic bottles of Coca-Cola drinks and 24 bottles of orange squash.

He said after police questioned the suspects, they told the police that they had stolen the items from Sana cash and Carry at ginnery corner after they connived with two Omega Security guards who were guarding the premises.

“The police then went to arrest those two guards making a total of five suspects and currently they are in police custody and they will be charged accordingly in court at a later date to be set,” said Thembachako.

Thembachako said Sana cash and Carry administration manager, Austin Kalupoka Phiri confirmed to police that indeed the items were stolen from Sana at Ginnery Corner and it is valued at MK75, 876.00.
