Police impersonator arrested: Swindled Malawi entrepreneurs

A 28-year-old man is in Police custody at Balaka Police Station in eastern Malawi for allegedly impersonating a police officer.

Prince Moyo: Was posing as a Police Officer.
Prince Moyo: Was posing as a Police Officer.

The suspect Prince Moyo was arrested following a complaint that he has been going to a certain businessman who is based at Balaka where he was introducing himself as a police officer.

According to Detective Sub Inspector Weston Njolomole, the suspect Prince Moyo has on several occasions been going to Zuc lodge to investigate some cases on pretence that he is a police officer.

“On the day of his arrest, the suspect accompanied the Bar man who once worked with Zuc lodge to a customer who owes Zuc lodge to force him pay the money but the customer called the proprietors of Zuc lodge to plead with them and this surprised Zuc management considering that the bar man was no longer working with Zuc lodge and reported the matter to police who rushed to the scene and arrested the two,” says Njolomole.

Njolomole said, during interview, the suspect told Balaka Police that he is indeed a police officer based at Zomba and works as a mechanic.

“This forced the Police to search his house where they recovered a police sweater which he claims was given to him by his late brother who was a police officer”.

Meanwhile the suspect is in police custody and is expected to appear before court soon where he will answer a case of personating a police officer which is contrary to section 389 of the Penal code.

Prince Moyo who was once a student at Andiamo Technical College comes from Chilokoteni village, Traditional Authority Kaluluma in Kasungu district.

Meanwhile, Police is appealing to the general public to ask for identity card if they are dealing with strangers who introduces themselves as police officers.

Mostly, Police officers working outside their duty district report to the nearest police formation they are going to work and are accompanied by the Police officers of that formation for easy identification.
